What things haunt you from your past, trouble you in the present, or give you great anxiety regarding the future?
One of the great needs of human beings is to feel safe and secure. This is not only with regard to our physical and material well-being, but also with regard to the inner drives that dog us, such as threats to our sense of worth and importance. So is there really any lasting safety and security found anywhere in this world where everything is never-lasting?
Really Great News Alert: there is such safety available in staying connected with the One Who exists outside of time and space! I’m reminded of the woman at the well with whom Jesus spoke. He spoke to her about her life; past, present, and future. In revealing Himself, He was revealing to her how life could make ultimate sense with regard to all three aspects of her existence. From having had a sad and twisted past, a boxed-in present, and a hopeless future, everything changed when He entered her journey. A new route, that hadn’t been there 30 minutes before, now presented the Way for her to experience a life that changed everything.
As the song writer in the Psalms said, “Only in You is my soul at rest and only in you comes my Ultimate rescue!” The song goes on to say that “He only is the stronghold who keeps me safe”. And he keeps safe anyone else who desires to connect with Him. The Rescuing Stronghold stood before that woman wearing a human body and now He stands before all of us to be our Rescuing Stronghold. That same Jesus, Who created us and the whole universe, knows all of the threats that are the debilitating memories of our past, the uncertainties and distractions that cloud our present, and all the storms that lay ahead on our journey. Together with Him though, no matter what the foe, He tells us that we are more than conquerors!
Coaches question: In thinking back through your life, what are one or two things that have been obstacles to you being in connection with Jesus and trusting Him to be your protection? What is one thing that you could do, moving forward, to position yourself totally under His care?
Imagine this certain Someone, who cares for you immeasurably beyond what you or anyone else, could ever care for you. That’s Jesus Who has invited all of us to do life together with Him under His safekeeping. He’s waiting for you to ask Him to tell you all about what He’s doing with you so you can walk together, all of the time, in that reality. This life, no matter what may come, takes on a new kind of confidence with Jesus – past, present, and future.
Now that is real safety and a kind that never runs out!
